Marmar Studio is a furniture and object design practice centered on cultivating endearment to the inanimate. By refining forms to their essentials, marmar creates pieces that align utility and character, where the act of use becomes an expression of personality. Marmar Studio’s practice sits at the intersection of minimalism and familiarity, exploring the bonds people form with the objects they see and use every day. At the heart of the work is the belief that we are naturally inclined to endow the inanimate with spirit. marmar’s visual language consciously anthropomorphizes mechanical, architectural, and animal forms, inviting viewers to see themselves reflected in the built environment. This spark of recognition inspires joyful intimacy with the inanimate, an emotional reaction marmar studio deeply experiences and strives to evoke through their work.

Where did you grow up? How did it influence you?
I grew up partly in Portland, OR and partly in Montreal, QC. I think both have been pretty foundational places for my aesthetic inspirations. Portland made me twee, Montreal made me indie (haha).
What’s the most prized object you own? Why?
I have a prized collection of hats and my current favorite is a hot pink beret.
In a world overflowing with objects, why continue making new things?
New times need new artifacts.
What’s your favorite material to work with and why?
Wood... it feels like my material mother tongue.
Tell us about something that inspires you.
Color, dye, and printing techniques applied to new materials.
Any advice for young designers?
If you feel joy making it, that spirit will come through in a piece.
