Q&A with Scott Newlin
Where did you grow up? How did it influence you?
Salt Lake City, Utah. Other than family and snow, it wasn't my vibe and I left as soon as I could. I really came of age in San Francisco and New York. These cities were apart of my design education and still inspires me today. I love the energy and diversity. Perhaps it isn't overtly evident in my work, but they are there.
What’s the most prized object you own? Why?
I own a small apartment in Brooklyn. NEVER thought I could do that. I think its a cool little spot and perfect home-base for me.
In a world overflowing with objects, why continue making new things?
Great question, no real good answer IMO. Many humans are driven to make things whether they have a passion for craft, something relevant to say or are building a legacy. I definitely have these drives. I admire a lot designers who have a long legacy, some have past, and I am so grateful that they've left this for humanity.
What design movement, current or historic, do you think is the most overrated and why?
Probably current social media-driven trends that don't have much rationale. IMO it makes design feel fast, cheap and transactional. That's a pretty scary proposition for the craft.
What’s your favorite material to work with and why?
I like glass. The history of glass making is really interesting. It also can become so many things and have so many finishes. At the end of the day, its almost always beautiful.
If you designed a chair describing your relationship with your father, what would it look like?
Sedia Uno by Enzo Mari - It takes some work to build, its not too comfortable, but its very cool. My dad, like Mari did his audience, encouraged me to be self-sufficient and creative.
Tell us about something that inspires you.
I am a designer who is inspired by design and architecture. I kinda think that's uncommon, which is odd. Like, musicians are inspired by other musicians. Anyway, the work of Aldo Rossi is very inspirational to me. His work is simple and geometric, yet it always has a lot of depth. The work is rooted in history, but speaks to the future. I definitely aspire to get to that place with my practice.
What would you do differently if you started your practice today?
I spent the majority of my career working for others. Partly I felt like I needed to and partly because I loved working and learning from others. Perhaps, I should have started my own practice sooner— bet on myself.
Any advice for young designers?
Keep learning and being curious about design. I'm always discovering new designers, projects and other connection points. I strengthens my work.
Any regrets?
I don't think so.
