Normalcy

NORMALCY is a design duo from North America who live and work in New York City. With each project, the cunning, devious, and ever-hungry NORMALCY attempts to capture and draw inspiration from their environment. Rather than following their natural human instincts, the duo often employs absurdly complex methods to design and create, which can comically backfire leading them to stumble upon even better solutions to the task at hand.

Q&A with Normalcy

What’s the most prized object you own? Why?

My toothbrush, because I'm scared of not having teeth.

My glasses, because without them I can’t see my fiancé, or my cat.

In a world overflowing with objects, why continue making new things?

Because we make objects that you're meant to keep forever, unlike so much of our environment that is built for short term use and disposability.

What’s your favorite material to work with and why?

Machinable metals. We want to be exacting in our precision to convey ideas, and with aluminum, brass, or stainless steel, there’s nowhere to hide. Every element down to the proper grit or the direction of finish can make or break an idea. It keeps us honest.

If you designed a chair describing your relationship with your father, what would it look like?

It would be made from a stacked 4500 page dissertation on why my generation sucks. it would also have a lot mirrors.

Tell us about something that inspires you.

Humor helps us be grounded and connect with our environment. During the design and prototyping process, it often helps us to find unexpected solutions and new ways to experiment.

Any advice for young designers?

Work with real materials as much as you can. Don’t worry about perfection. If you have a question about how to do something, try to answer or solve it yourself before asking. There isn’t always a level jump; most of the time, it’s just hard.

Any regrets?

no regerts.
