Q&A with Beeep
Where did you grow up? How did it influence you?
Born and raised in Korea, we moved to North America during our formative years. Bridging Eastern and Western cultures gives us mixed perspectives that's central to our identity, informing our thinking and our approach to our craft and design.
What’s the most prized object you own? Why?
Selfishly, our most prized object is the Toosh incense holder. It was the first thing we created together, debuting through Jonald Dudd 2024, but its value really comes from the journey it represents. We love the process it took, from the first spark of an idea to the messy material exploration and the silicone casting in our kitchen. It reflects us perfectly because it doesn't take itself too seriously and is rooted in a sense of humor that we think is essential to good design.
In a world overflowing with objects, why continue making new things?
We continue to create because there’s nothing like turning our personal perspectives into something tangible we can hold in our hands. Objects we want to make are more than just functional. We want to make things that have their own narrative and personality that tell a story we want to share with others.
Tell us about something that inspires you.
We are inspired by physical forms, materials, and the intersection of industrial processes and craftsmanship. We think every shape exists for a reason, so we’re constantly looking at objects around us and asking why they are the way they are to find inspiration within.
What’s your favorite material to work with and why?
It’s a bit of a dodge, but we don’t really have a favorite material. We usually start with an idea, then figure out what material fits best. Each material tells different stories, and when you pair the right one with a certain idea, they really start to enhance each other.
Any advice for young designers?
Our advice would be to find something that genuinely interests you and dive deeper into it. The most interesting work usually comes from obsessing over something that's often overlooked. Don't be afraid to go deep on the 'why' behind your interest because that’s where you’ll start to find your voice.
Any regrets?
Our only regret is not starting our journey sooner. We spent time overthinking and waiting for the right moment instead of just making things. We’ve since learned that the best insights come from jumping into the process and seeing where it takes us.
